Wigan Athletic (20th) – Yes we say this every year but
they keep on proving us wrong. Wigan have always had a slow start to a Premier
League season yet come up trumps at the end of the season with a tremendous run
of form to prevent relegation. Unfortunately there are only so many times you
can ride your luck and I think that this season Wigan’s luck will run out.
Martinez is a talented manager and has work wonders for Wigan but I feel that
going into the new Premier League season his squad just isn’t as good as the
other supposedly called lower teams.
They have the talents of Victor Moses and James McCarthy but with Moses being
linked to Chelsea can I see Wigan competing? No is the answer to that, Wigan
just don’t seem to have the capability of performing at the start of a season
and let’s face it, with the likes of Southampton ,Reading and West Ham coming
up I don’t see Wigan lasting longer than March in the Premier League. This may
sound harsh but we have to live up to reality, unless Wigan bring in some
quality players – which I can’t see happening – Wigan unfortunately could be
heading to the Championship after a lengthy stay in the Premier League.
Queens Park Rangers
(19th) – Despite spending heavily during the 2011/12 season the squad
didn’t really gel together and got very lucky at the end of the season to
prevent relegation under the management of Mark Hughes. This lucky run of form
came with valuable points being taken from Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool which
inevitably helped them stay up on the last day of the season. Like last season,
QPR are going on a spending spree and with so many new faces this could lead to
a dressing room full of egos. They have the right manager to control these egos
but I just can’t see the team playing well this season. Home form wasn’t great
for QPR and neither was their away form last season so this has to be improved.
This however cannot be changed instantly and unfortunately spending so much
money can’t prevent relegation and improve form. QPR don’t play the most
impressive of football and with what I’d call an average squad I can see QPR
going down to the Championship, others obviously will disagree but with the
current crop of players QPR have, I just don’t think they have the quality of
players that will keep them up. The team may be full of house hold names but
they are just too average for my liking so this is why I think QPR will go
down.
Swansea City (18th)
– I hate to say this but I really think they have a chance of getting
relegated especially now that Rodgers has moved on to manage Liverpool. We have
seen it with so many teams who have a great first season in the Premiership,
they get relegated the next and I feel that this inconsistency will make its
way to Swansea. Under Rodgers Swansea’s style of player was Barcelona-esque as
they kept possession and split open an opposition defence with a killer pass.
Look at the stats, under Rodgers, Leon Britton had a greater pass completion
percentage than the likes of Barcelona’s playmakers Xavi and Iniesta,
unbelievable for someone playing for Swansea.
However with the appointment of Michael Laudrup I can’t see Swansea
playing the same style of football and with the likes of Joe Allen amongst
others with links away from the Liberty Stadium Swansea are probably going to
struggle. Yes they have bought the highly rated Michu from Rayo Vallecano for
£2million but one player doesn’t have a huge impact. Dyer, Sinclair, Britton
and Allen will have to have another outstanding season – assuming they don’t
transfer – to have a successful second season but in my opinion, I think they
are going to be relegated but only just.
